RetroClinic DualOS for the BBC Master 128k

1 12 2009

I installed the “RetroClinic DualOS” for the BBC Master 128k today.

The DualOS Master Board from RetroClinic replaces the original 1Mbit ROM on the BBC Master 128. It contains 2 versions of the Master MOS, the original 3.20 that most machines come with, and the later MOS 3.50, with all the later versions of the utilities.

A switchable MOS gives the best of both worlds for compatibility. As was the case with the B+, and the Master when it first came out, because of changes to the OS code, software that accesses the operating system directly did not like the changes, and either ran badly, or crashed completely. This is still the case with the MOS 3.50. If you use only the later version, some of the games and utilities you used to enjoy and use will not work any more. Having both in your machine, available at the flick of a switch, gives you the most flexibility.

Both versions of the MOS have been correctly patched for the Y2K bug, so the year displays correctly from 1980 to 2079 – essential if some software was not written to be Y2K compliant, and you need to back the year off to make it run. Also, the DFS in MOS 3.50 has been patched to correct several bugs, and allow double density formatting under the DFS with the correct system calls. Add to that, the ADFSs on both versions of the operating system have been patched to use the Compact Flash Hard Drive.

Request for Help looking after the Historic Bombe Rebuild Machine at Bletchley Park

30 11 2009

(Original posting) 30 November 2009

Summary:  Help wanted maintaining and demonstration the Bombe machine – a request from John Harper.

Bletchley Park is constantly in the news and is a growing historic site with museums on codebreaking and on computers – and one of the main exhibits is a fully working operational Bombe machine.  This machine is the result of a remarkable rebuild project led by John Harper and earlier in the year won the prestigious IMechE Heritage Award.
The Bombe Rebuild Team now has a fully working and reliable machine but do not have enough resources to demonstrate it on a regular basis. We are now looking for volunteers to operate and demonstrate after appropriate training has been given.  Demonstrations are most needed at weekends.

Cascade Cassette 50 advert

14 11 2009

This is a advert for the “Cascade Cassette 50″ games collection. Personally I think this was one of the worse games collection ever released!

I scanned this advert from the “Computing with the Amstrad” magazine Vol.2 No.1 January 1986.

RCM November Open day this Sunday!

11 11 2009

RCM Logo Its that time of year again – the November Retro Computer Museum open day! This is now the 3rd public event held by this museum.

I will be attenting the event again this year, and im currently planning to bring 3 systems. One is my recently obtained RM Nimbus PC-186, another is my Amstrad CPC6128 (Now with its additional 3.5″ drive) and also a Apple SE/30. The Apple may not make it to the weekend, as I think the display is about to fail. I do have a spare SE/30 but I doubt I will be able to swap componets around over the next few days. If the SE/30 doesnt go, I will take my 486 PC with a mixture of older games.

If you would like to know more about the event, please click the banner below. Hopefully I will see you there!

How did having tons of 11 year olds thinking you were god feel?
What is the worst game you have ever played?
Is it just nostalga or were games better in the 80s?
Crabs piss out of their eyes. What’s your favourite animal fact?

Simple 8 bit interface for Spectrum

1 11 2009

Ive finally built a proper solid 8bit interface for the Sinclair Spectrum.

This adapter allows me to use a IDE hard disk or Compact Flash card on my Sinclair +3. Ive had to install 2 new EPROMS in the machine for it to support IDE devices. Im using the +3e ROMS.

CF card is oly 128Mb, but as the interface in only 8 bit, only half of the cards capacity is available. Still, 64Mb is a lot of storage for a spectrum!
